In Saudi Arabia, deaf and mute children have started learning the Quran with Tajweed (proper recitation) and memorization through a unique program started by a couple in Riyadh. According to Arab media, a Saudi citizen named Sultan Al-Hamoud and his wife Wafa Al-Hamid have dedicated themselves to teaching the Quran to deaf and mute children. Sultan Al-Hamoud has 20 such students, while Wafa Al-Hamid teaches five deaf and mute girls at Al-Sheikh Saleh Al-Hanaki Mosque in Al-Qassim Governorate on a weekly basis.
The deaf and mute students of Sultan Al-Hamoud have completed memorizing the last part of the Quran in two years and are determined to memorize the whole Quran. This noble initiative of teaching the Quran to deaf and mute children is carried out between the Maghrib and Isha prayers. When asked how he teaches the Quran to deaf and mute children, Sultan Hamoud explained that he teaches them to recognize the letters through gestures, followed by teaching them words. The children write the correct letters on paper and especially the mute children present the lesson in writing. He further added that most of the students have already completed memorizing the last part and are eager to memorize the whole Quran.
