Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, the most senior judge of the Supreme Court, took oath as the 29th Chief Justice of Pakistan, while important changes were made in the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) and the Judicial Commission (JC). Member Justice Muneeb Akhtar became a part of the JC, Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa formed the first bench for the hearing after taking oath, and the full court of the Supreme Court will hear the Practise and Procedure Act case today, said Registrar Supreme Court Jazeela Aslam. The list has been released. Sessions Judge Okara Jazeela Islam was appointed the first female registrar of the Supreme Court. While Dr. Mushtaq was appointed as the Secretary to Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, the oath-taking ceremony was held at the President’s House, Islamabad, where President Dr. Arif Alvi was appointed as the Chief Justice. The Chief Justice of Pakistan took the oath of Justice Qazi Faiz Isa. Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa established a new tradition on the occasion of his oath taking; he took the oath in both English and Urdu languages, while with the special permission of President Arif Alvi, his wife Begum Serena Isa stood next to him on the stage. In the swearing-in ceremony of Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar and Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir, besides senior officers of the armed forces, the Supreme Court and High Courts were present. Serving and retired judges, provincial governors and chief ministers, caretaker federal ministers, and other important personalities participated. Justice Qazi Faiz Isa’s tenure as Chief Justice of Pakistan will be about 13 months. Justice Qazi Faiz Isa will retire from his post on October 25, 2024. Justice Qazi Faiz Isa became an advocate Balochistan High Court on January 30, 1985. Justice Faiz Isa became an advocate Supreme Court in March 1998. He was associated with the legal profession for 27 years before being appointed as a judge. Justice Faiz Isa was directly appointed as the Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court on August 5, 2009. Gaya, Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court on September 5, 2014. The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faiz Isa, formed the first bench for the hearing after taking the oath. The full court of the Supreme Court will hear the Practise and Procedure Act case today. Justice Qazi Faiz Isa has taken the stand for the past several months that he will not be part of any bench until the Supreme Court Practise and Procedure Act is decided, and he expressed this in the case related to the military court. What happened when he was away from the bench? Now, after taking the oath of office on Sunday, he has constituted the first bench for the hearing, which will be heard today. The case will be heard by the 15-member full court of the Supreme Court. The Registrar Supreme Court, Jazeela Islam, has issued the cause list, and the hearing of the case will be held at 9:30 a.m. today. Earlier, the bench headed by former Chief Justice Umar Atta Bandial issued a restraining order on the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Act. During the PDM regime, this bill was passed by both houses, under which the Chief Justice’s automatic notice authority was limited. According to the bill, a committee comprising the Chief Justice and the two senior-most judges will decide on the formation of new benches and the decision on self-notification. Under the new legislation, Nawaz Sharif got the right to appeal the sentence received on the notice itself, while Yusuf Raza Gilani, Jahangir Tareen, and other parties can also challenge the decisions. After the swearing in of the new Chief Justice, important changes were also made in the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) and Judicial Commission (JC). According to a private TV channel, Justice Ejaz-ul-Ahsan has become a member of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), and Justice Sardar Tariq is already a member of the Supreme Judicial Council. According to the Constitution, the Chief Justice and the two most senior judges are members of the Supreme Judicial Council. Justice Muneeb Akhtar became a member of the Judicial Commission (JC) established for the appointment of judges; Justice Sardar Tariq, Justice Ijazul Hassan, and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah are already members of the commission. Other members of the Supreme Court include a retired judge, a law minister, and an attorney general. Meanwhile, the Chief Justice of Pakistan appointed Sessions Judge Okara Jazeela Aslam as the first female Registrar of the Supreme Court, while Dr. Mushtaq was appointed as the secretary to Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa. The spokesperson of the Supreme Court has said that the Lahore High Court has entrusted the services of Session Judge Okara Jazeela Aslam to the Supreme Court. Jazeela Aslam has been appointed Registrar Supreme Court on deputation for 3 years.
