On the evening of August 9, an invitation was received from GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi that “we are conferring lifetime achievement award on August 11 to General Raheel Sharif, a proud former student of Government College Lahore”. Government College Lahore lives in our hearts, its events have always been a matter of pride for us. I entered Government College Lahore five minutes before the scheduled time on August 11 and saw students standing on both sides of the road with flags and flowers, happiness on their faces, the main reason for this happiness was that they were standing to welcome a proud son of their great school. This wave of happiness was going to Bukhari Auditorium touching the tower in the form of a rainbow, in the hall full of guests, Professor Siddiq Awan announced that General Raheel Sharif will be with us in a short time. I was accompanied by Dr. Halima Afridi, Vice President, Old Ravens Union, while sajid Goraya, senior vice president of the union, accompanied zahid gogi and a few friends in the next row. As soon as General Raheel Sharif entered the hall, people stood up, clapping for a long time. Perhaps the main reason for this is that he is the undisputed figure among the generals who have retired in the last twenty years. When the ceremony started, Professor Dr. Asghar Zaidi started mentioning the great ravens.
He told the audience that ever since he came, he has started giving lifetime achievement awards to the great Old Ravens. Dr Zaidi said that five awards have been given in this regard before General Raheel Sharif, the personalities who were given these awards include Aitzaz Ahsan, Hadiqa Kayani, Ramiz Raja, Dr Samar Mubarakmand and Shafqat Amanat Ali. Dr. Asghar Zaidi also mentioned his love for Government College and then out of what he did in a few years, he told only five big works. He said that a new campus of Government College Lahore has been established on 360 acres of field land near Kala Shah Kaku, eight departments have been shifted to the new campus while many more departments will be transferred this year. Dr Zaidi also wants a tower to be built in the new campus so that the government college can be reflected. Government College Lahore is going to provide residential facilities to all its staff members for the first time.
A large hostel for women is being set up in Government College Lahore as the first girls hostel was small. A law school has been established in the name of Allama Iqbal in Government College Lahore, a school of business has also been established, a school of journalism has also been made, no matter how many marks the students get, their entrance test and interview have been made mandatory at the time of admission to the Government College so that the quality of education of the Government College does not fall anywhere. go. In Government College Lahore, special attention is paid to co-curricular activities so that the character of the readers can be built here, in this regard more than 80 societies are working, these societies cover all areas of life except literature, journalism, drama and music. Dr. Asghar Zaidi wants that the rest of the educational institutions of the country should also benefit from these societies, so he organizes special workshops and seminars.
While presenting the Lifetime Achievement Award to General Raheel Sharif, the audience was told that he served as the 15th Army Chief and now he is the first head of the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition of 42 countries. Former Foreign Secretary Shamshad Ahmed Khan, Mian Misbah-ur-Rehman, Mian Imran Masood, Old Ravens Union President Syed Tayyab Rizvi and some other dignitaries were presented with souvenirs. Addressing the audience, General Raheel Sharif said, “It is no less than an honor to be a Raven, the first of us siblings, my sister Khalida Sharif did MA English from Government College Lahore in 1964, then my brother Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed Nishan Haider and other brother Mumtaz Sharif continued to study here.
I came to Government College Lahore in 1972.I wanted to become a soldier, so I joined my martyred brother’s unit, I read the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and learn a lot from him.” General Raheel Sharif remembered the moments spent in Government College Lahore and then said, “I have not forgotten the fruit chaat of Anarkali yet”. When this khaksar went on stage, there were a few things, there was a mention of the past and I was pleasantly surprised by the memory of General Raheel Sharif. The event was spectacular in every respect. A student of Government College Lahore performed a very good naat, here I got the opportunity to listen to the mesmerizing new tune of the national anthem. The students of Nazir Hussain Music Society presented beautiful poetry and the poetry that sang Kalam Iqbal in the last moments was very impressive.
Although there are idols in the sleeves of the congregation
I have the command of Allah.
